Devlok by Devdutt Pattanaik

A very basic introduction to the vast and complex world of Hindu Mythology

burn-the-fat-feed-the-muscle-tom-venuto The book is a compilation of subjects that featured on EPIC channel’s tv show by the same name. It breaks down various stories, symbols and rituals that form the basis of Hindu culture.

The selection of subjects is varied and broadly covers the mythological landscape. Although the topics covered are more on the surface level rather than a detailed investigation. This could be because the book is based on a TV show concept, which is why the book doesn’t go deep. Furthermore, if you are an Indian, you would probably know most of the stories, however, this can be a good primer for those who have no knowledge on Hindu mythology and would like to know more.

Pattanaik has found a neat formula to market Hindu mythology to readers by breaking up myriad stories into separate themes for his books. The good thing is he makes this knowledge accessible to people, especially young urban readers, who, perhaps, don’t engage actively with this. This book is one of such series.
